Jewelry fashioned out of precious stones and other natural products have been in popular for centuries. Besides the beautiful Diamonds, Rubies, Topaz, Corals etc, Amber also has its place in the hearts of many as a sought after item for making beautiful amber earrings, drops and pendants etc.

Before getting down to the beauty of Amber, a bit of knowledge about its origin is very interesting and makes us cherish these gifts from nature. Amber is a tree resin which has turned to fossil over centuries. It is first seen as a soft and sticky liquid coming out of the bark of a tree which solidifies over time trapping organic matter inside. Being a little thick in nature, it does not flow easily and many times insects like mosquito, spider, beetle or ants get trapped into it and over a period of time the resin gets hardened along with the trapped insect and becomes Amber. It can be used to create beautiful objects which come in various hues and colors and are sought after for use in ornamental items and jewellary. There are five types of Ambers which are categorized according to their properties.

A lot of Amber comes to the market from Russia and Baltic Sea coast. The Dominican is also very famous for the amber beads which are used to make beaded necklaces and ear drops. The ambers which have an insect trapped are used as ornamental objects. Beautiful yellow colour ambers are used as pendants and ear rings combined with silver or gold casing and artificial stones which are sold in the market passed off as the real thing. However there are simple tests with which you can find out the real gem from the fake . Heating up a needle and poking the amber will give you the smell of wood resin if it is real.
