Important Materials for Drill Bits

One of the most well-known cutting tools, are drill bits. They are commonly fastened to a drill that is electric, which allows the bits to have a strong push. Drill bits are great for making various holes in different sizes and on many kinds of surfaces. The holes can be used for a variety of purposes such as holes for screws, various artistic creations and even portraits.

Drill bits are crafted with different kinds of materials. Some are made with specific materials for specific purposes and they basically determine which kind of surface the drill bit should be used. The material also determines the drill bit’s life-span. Materials that are used to make drill bits include high or low steel carbon, high speed steel, titanium coated, carbide tipped, black oxide, cobalt and even zirconium nitride. A well-known among them is diamond drill bit and is discussed well often.

One type of drill bit that is not too durable and needs frequent sharpening, is soft low carbon bits that are made of steel. These bits are usually used on malleable materials like wood. If you are looking for durable bits, try high carbon bits. These are more efficient than the low carbon however, they have a tendency of being unable to withstand high temperatures.

HSS bits are high speed bits made of steel and are perfect working on all kinds of materials such as metal, wood and so much more. The benefit of having these bits is that they can perform the very same functions of the aforementioned bits but can endure higher temperatures.

Another type of drill bit is the carbide tipped bit. They are ordinary bits and have tungsten carbine or other identical materials screwed or braised on the tip. Due to this layout, these bits are adaptable and rugged. However, these bits are more costly than others.

In order to extent the lifetime of a HSS bit, be sure to select a titanium coating. These coatings can either be titanium, titanium nitride, titanium carbon nitride or even aluminum nitride.
