Impacted Teeth

Many people suffer from impacted teeth. This is when your permanent teeth fail to emerge from the gums or they only partially emerge through the gums. Wisdom teeth are prone to being impacted teeth and they are usually removed by a Modesto Dental office. These teeth are the last to emerge in the mouth and most of the time they make the mouth too crowded and push the other teeth out of alignment so they are removed.

Impacted teeth are usually turned to the side or they are tilted. They will need to be removed from the mouth as they will cause swelling and pain in the mouth. It can also cause a condition known as pericoronitis, which is swelling and inflammation of the gums. It can actually lead to swelling and inflammation in the neck and throat if it is not treated.

A Modesto Cosmetic Dentist will take xrays of your mouth to see if you have any impacted teeth. They will then discuss extraction of the teeth. You will need anesthesia in order to numb the mouth so you do not feel pain. The dentist will then cut open the gum tissue and remove the teeth from the jaw bone. The procedure can go quickly if it is just one tooth as it will take about 20 minutes or less per tooth.

After having impacted teeth removed, the healing process will begin. This can take a couple weeks or months for the area to heal entirely. You will need to follow the treatment recommendations of your dentist to avoid infection and problems that arise after impacted teeth are removed. Once it has healed, you may need to have implants put in if the teeth were necessary. The implants can take 6-12 months to complete and a single implant usually runs about $2,000 or more.
